Fred Stonehouse, Great Lakes maritime historian and author of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Marquette, said the man who painted the life ring and stenciled the ore freighter’s name on it called him recently to say that after hanging it at his father’s camp, a storm blew it away and he never found it.

There was no intention by the man to deceive anyone, Stonehouse said. He used Edmund Fitzgerald to honor the men on the ship.
