The steamship Cason J. Callaway left the Port of Erie on Friday evening and crept through the icy waters of Lake Erie to begin a new shipping season.

Another vessel, the tug-barge Presque Isle, won’t be far behind. It is tentatively set to leave at noon today, although its departure could be delayed.

Both vessels were here for winter lay-up to get routine maintenance.

The Callaway will be going to Two Harbors, Minn., to load iron-ore pellets and then travel to Lake Michigan, according to the Great Lakes Fleet/Key Lakes Co., which owns both the Callaway and the Presque Isle.

The Presque Isle will be heading to Two Harbors to load iron ore and then continue on to Conneaut, Ohio.
