Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, located in Peninsula State Park, was built in 1868 to guide sailors safely through the narrow east shipping channel to the port of Green Bay. This east channel was lined by stark bluffs on one side, and the flat treacherous shoals of the Strawberry Islands on the other. Although the channel is no longer used by modern ships, it was used by 19th century schooners, and continues to be heavily used by recreational boat traffic. The light was automated in 1926, and the keeper’s quarters allowed to disintegrate over the years. The quarters were restored and renovated by the Door County Historical Society in the late 20th century, with keepers’ family members providing many hours of loving assistance and lending their expertise to ensure the building was restored to its period-correct state.
