The potential of this regulation to affect Great Lakes Shipping is enormous. What can an ordinary citizen do to become involved in advocating for the shipping industry?

Most harbor tugs do NOT use that "thick, tar-like fuel" aka bunker no. 6. They use diesel fuel, just like the big trucks and yachts.

Tugs are soot-producers simply because they are like railroad switching engines—lots of idling and then demands for shorts spurts of hard work. That makes for puffs of sooty exhaust. Ships are cleaner because they operate steady-state for hundreds of hours at a time.

(I write articles on tugboat technology for Pacific Maritime magazine and other publications.)

I am a property owner on the SE shore of Lake Ontario, T of Richland, Osweogo Co. N.Y.. Our beach assoc. numbers 75 residences, seasonal and yearround. Most are 80+ years old and have already lost 100-200 feet of shore to the 1958 treaty. Our potential loss(es) and those of the riparian townships is truly monstrous. Despite this, Congresspersons, McHugh and Slaughter, have thrown our area under the bus. This is the largest potential, probable case of EMINENT DOMAIN without compensation I've ever heard of. Is anybody, or group, out there looking at classaction lawsuit(s)????

The Walter J. McCathy was anchored in the St. Marys River at our place near 9 Mile Point. You can see pictures of the McCarthy turning around on my blog. When ships anchor in the river, they must be facing upbound. Since the McCathy was going down bound, she had to turn around to anchor and then again to resume her trip.

Watching a 1,000 footer turn around in the river is always exciting to watch.

Re: Duluth Tribune article about cargo sweepings

It States that some 2 million pounds per year are swept over the side - Does that make sense to anybody? That equates to 1 million short tons - something that is NOT Happening. If companies ordering the cargo found that much material missing after paying for it - don't you think a red flag would have been raised by now???
The Coast Guard Scientific Study reveals a figure more like 500 tons per year - way less than 1,000,000! I'm all for being environmentally friendly but it appears many "Green" folks have an agenda no matter what the facts are. The gentleman from the MPCA that claims coal is washed up on shore - there is a black sand that washes up on all beaches and I doubt he tested what he found. Further, if there were truth to that - we could go out almost on a daily basis and find washed up coal on the shoreline - and it isn't happening! Let's all keep to the FACTS!

The funny thing is about this discovery is that the Older Guys in Kingston have kept this a secret for years and could only find them by dead reckoning. Grain Elevators have been torn down, barns have been burnt and high rises block other sites.

So now when some one else locates them the typical response is " We've been diving them for years"

GPS numbers for at least three of the wrecks

There is not one of these purported 'discoveries' that is new. All have been previously reported and recorded by Parks Canada's Underwater Archaeology Team and other entities. The sensational nature of this report - occasioned by an individual's hyperbole - is doing the cause of protection and preservation of important historical sites no good at all. Excitable commentary by ill-informed reporters is positively counter-productive to the quiet, but effective efforts of real research and conservation bodies.

The press is presenting this issue as if there were no opposition. The fact of the matter is, there are some serious concerns with the Great Lakes Compact. Specifically, the Compact has exceptions for bottled water and fails to incorporate the Public Trust doctrine. See http://www.commondreams.org/news2008/0731-20.htm for more info. Also go to http://watermyth.blogspot.com/2008/07/great-lakes-waters-are-not-for-sale.html to take action on this issue.

Michigan Maritime Museum is going to have an exhibit on Great Lakes freighters, probably in 2009, now. The theme will be (for the Museum's guests) "Did you know how much really goes on the Great Lakes?" We'll describe the ports, the ships the cargo carried.

We need lots of pictures, posters and models etc etc to go with what we already have, which is a lot. Loans are fine - we can return it all.

Any ideas? I'd be interested in brainstorming a little with someone or just getting ideas.

Thanks

Who are you kidding? I have lived near the Whitefish Point Light Station for most of my life and this trumped up ghost stuff just started in the past couple of years as tourism waned at the Whitefish Point Light Station. People that I know who are alive and were keepers of the Whitefish Point Light Station never reported ghosts. Come on, Fred, you know better too.

I am employeed as an electrician at ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor.
I worked briefly as an operator on permit out of the hall in Lakeville IN just prior to becoming employed with ArcelorMittal.

I just returned from training for union matters at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

I am upset by the scabs working in Operating Engineers' places. These operators are incompetent and dangerous. A young fellow was killed by a dump truck turning into the path of his RC Loco.

If there is anything I can do, or someone would like to meet with me to discuss what USW can do to help, please email me. This strike and this problem is our problem too.

Respectfully,
Anna Marie Miller

It's encouraging to see such a collaborative effort between the USCG, law enforcement and the first responder networks. This is an issue I talk about in my new book, "Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System."

The book was originally written with the intent to be a resource for the first responders that usually don't get training resources, yet must react if an incident occurs. So far, many non-first responder types have written me back and said, "I never knew that stuff about the maritime world." To me that's encouraging as my intent was to let folks have a better understanding of how the maritime transportation system impacts our communities.

Back to the point of the article. It is vital that agencies get together and gain an understanding of each others' contribution to a large scale criminal, terrorist, natural disaster or maritime casualty.

I am the President of the Injured and Abused Injured Workers :

It is time that all injured employees be given back their right as a Canadian Citizen. We want the right to receive proper medical care , we want the right to retain our own lawyer.

Our rights were stolen away by the those very members of the Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Federation of Small Business. These businerss groups lobby government to serve their membership and it is time these business groups TOLD those people elected to serve and protect the citizens of Canada ... to hand us all our rights back.

These WCB Boards are abusive and they have destroyed many injured workers live , they have create situation whereby injured workers have committed suicide. This must stop and I beg the Labour movement to call upon the CLC and for all to unite and get this done.

If we are not able to get the right of injured workers restored , then the membership of all unions are at risk to more cancer and disease in the workplace. As it stands right now, the Business Community rely on the abusive powers and the Bad Faith of the workers Compensation Act to protect them.

Really want to make the workplace safe? Then get rid of these vile WCB Boards.

Cheers

Thanks for this story. I entered that same raffle with $100 of birthday money but came up short. The raffle is once again taking place and information can be found be found by calling or writitin the museum at 120 N. Madison Ave., Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235
920.743.5958 (phone) & 920.743.9483 (fax) http://www.dcmm.org/

Thanks for the information on the cruise sure is good to read what I missed.
The two bumper ships (Calloway and American Republic) are in Sturgeon Bay being tended to as we speak. They look like two fighters in their corners with the trainers tending to them side by side.

Have a good day!

Just thought you would all like to know that the Door County Maritime Museum is holding another freighter raffle! What follows is the information.

Win A Freighter Adventure Cruise!

Sturgeon Bay -- The Door County Maritime Museum is privileged to have received a special raffle prize from the wonderful folks at Great Lakes Fleet/Key Lakes Inc. – an adventure on a Great Lakes freighter – Edwin H. Gott (1,004’), Edgar B. Spear (1,004’), or Roger Blough( 858’)! Trips onboard a working freighter are only available to the shipping companies customers. The only way for the general public to take a cruise on a working Great Lakes freighter is through a raffle.

If you are the winner, you and three friends will set your sails for a 6-1/2 to 7 day voyage. This trip is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to cruise on a working freighter during the Great Lakes sailing season – between June 1 and September 30, 2008. Departure port and dates will be coordinated with the winner and the winner must be flexible concerning scheduling and port of departure/return. The freighter itineraries will be between Duluth, MN to Conneaut, OH or Two Harbors, MN to Gary, IN. Guests must be 21 or older and are required to adhere to all company policies and safety procedures. Accommodations include rooms with 2 twin beds and private bath. Each freighter is equipped with owner’s lounges that boast spectacular views. On the Speer and the Gott, your view from the owners lounge is forward across the vessel and on the Blough you look aft at the beautiful water you just traversed.

Tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100; proceeds benefit the Museum’s annual fund. Tickets may be purchased at the Museum's headquarters in Sturgeon Bay or by phoning 920.743.5958. The drawing will take place on Friday, May 23, 2008 at the Museum’s headquarters (120 N. Madison Ave., Sturgeon Bay) at 6:30 p.m. Winner need not be present to win.

The Door County Maritime Museum was founded in 1969 and preserves the rich maritime heritage of Door County, Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. Headquartered in Sturgeon Bay, WI, the Museum operates seasonal facilities at the Cana Island Lighthouse and in Gills Rock, offering visitors a comprehensive view to the County’s local maritime legacy. Museum information can be obtained by phone at 920.743.5958, email at info@dcmm.org or by accessing the Web site at www.dcmm.org.

<b>We</b> don't have <i>any</i> tickets on sale... we do not sell anything on this site. We merely forward whatever news and events we can find regarding maritime heritage, which includes the annual lighthouse walk, of course. If you would like to share updates or news about anything Great Lakes Shipping-related, please send it to us at info@greatlakesshipwatchers.com. We welcome news and material from everyone.

Please do realize you are commenting on a 9-month old post *wink* so it's not exactly "current" news. Obviously, date stamps determine the timeliness of items posted on this site.

This is not the only project planned around Prince Edward County for off-shore and near-shore wind energy development. Gilead Power also claims "title" to 8500 hectares off the south shore of Prince Edward County. Previously Trillium had indicated that the project would be in the shallow waters around Main Duck Island, which is not that far from the shipping channel. We can expect a significant number of turbines to be situated in the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Should make for interesting navigation through the maze of turbines.

Wise choice by Lorain's Planning Commission to open up further discussion on the potential limestone processing plant. Good to hear it was a unanimous decision to take this back to the Board of Appeals on January 2, 2008 for consideration of the zoning change for this operation.
